Bishop Carlos Simon Vasquez told the Word Congress of Families only the family 'can guarantee an authentic education in values.'

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (CNA) - The Fifth World Congress of Families began in Amsterdam today, under the theme, “Modern Families: Traditional Values.” In his Inaugural address, the under secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family, Bishop Carlos Simon Vasquez, said only the family “can guarantee an authentic education in values.”

Speaking on behalf of Cardinal Ennio Antonelli, the president of the dicastery, Bishop Vasquez said family associations are an urgent need today, in order to promote the true identity of the family.

The Church cannot put families on the same plane as the individual or the State, he stated. “The natural family, which is the source and treasure of society, must be sustained at every level,” he said.

Bishop Vasquez also recalled several passages from Pope Benedict XVI’s recent encyclical “Caritas in Veritate,” underscoring that only the family “can guarantee an authentic education in human values, because it ensures altruism and temporal continuity, which are essential in education.”

“Only the vocation to paternity and maternity can transmit a responsible education in responsible procreation, which brings with it the necessary union between personal and social ethics through a harmonious existence that only the family can offer,” he added.

Moreover, only the family “can serve as a counterpoint to the current global economic crisis, because at its center it is a source of social solidarity and civil progress,” the bishop said.

The World Congress of Families is an international pro-family network of organizations, experts and people of good will from more than 60 countries whose purpose is to defend the importance of the family as a social institution. It was founded in 1997 by The Howard Center for Family, Religion and Society in Rockford, Illinois. Previous sessions of the congress were held in Prague (1997), Geneva (1999), Mexico City (2004) and Warsaw (2007).

As Knights and their families have arrived for the 127th Supreme Convention in Phoenix and Marian Congress to follow, they have been met with high temperatures and gracious hospitality.

This year’s convention follows another record-breaking fraternal year with increased membership, charitable contributions, volunteer hours and life insurance in force. It also corresponds to the Year for Priests, which was inaugurated by Pope Benedict XVI on June 19, as well as the Year of the Volunteer, an initiative launched by the Knights last winter in response to the economic downturn.

Convention Coverage

In addition to the thousands experiencing the Supreme Convention firsthand, millions throughout the world will be able to watch or listen to many of the convention proceedings. EWTN, Salt+Light TV in Canada and CatholicTV will be broadcasting from the convention, as will Sirius Satellite Radio.

In addition, the Knights of Columbus Web site will be constantly updated with photographs, articles and other information throughout the week.

Hero On the High Seas
When duty called and the world was watching the pirate hostage situation unfold, Cmdr. Francis X. Castellano performed his job with honor and distinction.
As the commander of the destroyer USS Bainbridge, Castellano was on the front line of the rescue operation that freed Capt. Richard Phillips from the grips of the Somali pirates, who had boarded his merchant ship Maersk-Alabama, and taken him hostage four days earlier.

The rescue on Easter Sunday, April 12, involved Navy snipers who killed three of the pirates holding Capt. Phillips on a covered lifeboat after they left the recovered Maersk-Alabama.
“We all worked seamlessly together, ensuring that the mission was accomplished,” Castellano told MSNBC in an exclusive televised interview.
Calling the situation tense, the commander said, “In the forefront of my mind was ensuring that Capt. Richard Phillips was returned to his family safely and to the United States.”
Cmdr. Castellano, age 41, is a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He joined Patchogue Council (N.Y.) # 725 in 1986, before his 20th birthday, and became a member of Holy Cross Assembly 3048 in Tennessee in 2006.
His father, also Francis X. Castellano, is a retired general agent for the Knights of Columbus insurance program.
Cmdr. Castellano is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and the Navy War College. He had formerly been assigned as an operations chief on the USS Cole, which was bombed by terrorists in October 2000.
Capt. Phillips also is Catholic, and Catholic News Service published a story about his Vermont parish and pastor praying for his safe return.
‘An Easter to Remember’
Lisa Castellano, the commander’s wife of 19 years, spoke to Fathers for Good by phone two days after the rescue.
“He called me last night. I was happy to hear his voice,” she said, speaking from their home in Virginia Beach, Va., where they live with their two teenage daughters. “He wanted to talk to me and his girls, to see what was going on in our lives.”
Castellano had been deployed on February 20th to patrol for pirates in the waters off Africa, she said.
“When the news began to break on Wednesday (April 8th) about the hostage situation, I had a feeling my husband would be involved. That was confirmed later that day when I heard the name of the ship on the news reports.”
She continued, “He’s a dedicated professional. He’s a family man, a man of faith. I didn’t have any fears for his abilities in the situation. But I had the natural fears any military wife would have for her husband.”
Mrs. Castellano and her daughters were visiting friends on Easter Sunday when news broke of the successful rescue of Capt. Phillips by the Bainbridge. She was in the backyard hiding Easter eggs for the children when she was called inside to see her husband’s picture on television.
“It was a time for celebration,” she said. “It was definitely an Easter to remember.”

One Million Rosaries For Unborn Babies

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE (February 2nd, 2009) - The 2nd annual ONE MILLION ROSARIES FOR UNBORN BABIES prayer event is scheduled to take place on Friday(May 1st), Saturday(May 2nd), and Sunday(May 3rd), 2009. A person wanting to be a participant will pray at least one Rosary on any of the three days for the following intention: For an end to the surgical and non-surgical killing of unborn human persons. This multinational pro-life prayer event is being coordinated by the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization.

"Last year's ONE MILLION ROSARIES FOR UNBORN BABIES prayer event was on one day only," said Patrick Benedict, president of the Memphis-based Saint Michael the Archangel Organization and a parishioner at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in the Diocese of Memphis in Tennessee. " This year, Friday has been added for everyone, but particularly for students at schools. Sunday, also, has been added for everyone, but particularly for people to pray the Rosary either before or after Masses."

We are expecting this to be an exceptional and inspiring day.

Speakers include retired Bishop Sylvester Ryan of the Diocese of Monterey and well known author Ken Blanchard, author of the best seller "The One Minute Manager." It will start at 9 am, include a continental breakfast and lunch, and close with mass at 5 pm. Confessions will be offered during the day. There is no charge for the conference, a free will offering will be taken.

What is the Great Adventure?

Dear Worthy State Deputy,

We are respectfully inviting the State Council to participate in the leadership for Catholics for ProtectMarriage.com in ways that you feel would be most beneficial to the over all campaign.

We appreciate the support of the State Council for the long-term Stand with Children effort. While it remains a critical state and national educational priority, the more immediate business of passing Proposition 8 has required us to suspend operations until the beginning of 2009. We hope to resume our partnership on that effort at that time.

Turning to the Prop 8 campaign, Ned Dolejsi and ProtectMarriage.com have asked me to organize and chair Catholics for ProtectMarriage.com – the lay-led Catholic organization and recruitment effort in support of Prop 8. The Knights played a critical part in the qualification effort for Prop 8; it is an understatement to say that brother Knights are crucial to the success of the campaign in November.

With much of the preliminary work on the campaign completed, the grassroots volunteer effort is slated to begin the weekend of August 16 with neighborhood canvassing throughout the state. That does not leave much time for a major organizational effort to support that. In addition to recruiting tens of thousands of Catholic volunteers, we are currently working on identifying and appointing Catholic leaders in every diocese, region and county.

Part of the strategy is to solicit endorsements from every parish ministry and every Catholic fraternal, service, devotional, ethnic, and social organization in the state. We are asking each group to appoint a liaison and encourage their members to volunteer directly for the campaign. That will enable coordination on Catholic projects as well as overall campaign efforts in the community. This lay-led effort will be coordinated closely with the California Catholic Conference and diocesan programs.

If you wish, we would be happy to list the Knights of Columbus as a co-sponsor of this Catholic coalition and include its logo on Catholics for ProtectMarriage.com material along with the logos of the California Catholic Conference and Catholics for the Common Good. We are already extending the same offer to the National Council of Catholic Women, which as you know is a coordinating council for many women’s groups including Catholic Daughters and the Young Ladies Institute. Others may be added in the future in the future, but this will be a very selective group.

Most importantly, Ned Dolejsi and I would like to offer the following suggestions for ways in which the State Council can help move the “Yes on 8 -- ProtectMarriage.com grassroots campaign ahead rapidly:

1. Announce the formation of Catholics for ProtectMarriage.com by email so that brother Knights will know of this coordinated Catholic effort and can connect more directly with the campaign that will start shortly in the communities surrounding their parishes. This is essential for the implementation of the campaign’s grassroots plan. Through you, we would also like to extend an offer to brother Knights for leadership positions in the top campaign hierarchy at the regional or county levels.

2. Establish a liaison at the State Council level to facilitate communications between the campaign and state officers, and through them with Chapter Presidents and District Directors.

3. Arrange a state leadership conference call to brief Chapter Presidents, District Deputies and representatives from Councils on campaign strategy, timelines and the imperative of grassroots participation and leadership. We propose to have a bishop, Ned Dolejsi and a senior campaign professional participate on the call. Because of the shortness of time to get organized, it would be best to arrange the call within the next 10 days.

We know this is a busy time as you and fellow officers prepare to leave for the Annual Convention. Since we are about to print large volumes of literature for Catholics for ProtectMarriage.com, please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to have the Knights represented as a sponsor of the coalition.

Ned and I would be happy to discuss this with you, but he is out of town until Thursday or Friday.

Knights of Columbus sets record for charitable giving, volunteer service

New Haven, CT - June 6, 2008 - The Knights of Columbus announced today that it set new all-time records for charitable giving and volunteer service hours in 2007. Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson released the results of the survey in a speech to state deputies and members of the board of directors in New Haven.

The results of the Order's Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity for the year ending December 31, 2007 show that total contributions to charity at all levels reached $144,911,781 - exceeding the previous year's total by more $1 million. The figure includes $31,235,220 donated by the Supreme Council, and $113,676,561 in charitable donations from state and local councils, Fourth Degree assemblies, and squire circles.

The survey also shows that the reported number of volunteer hours by Knights for charitable causes grew to 68,695,768 hours, up more than 400,000 hours from 2005. There were 393,030 Knights of Columbus blood donors during the year, and Knights made more than 5.5 million visits to the sick and bereaved.

Cumulative figures show that during the past decade, the Knights of Columbus has donated nearly $1.28 billion to charity, and provided in excess of 612 million hours of volunteer service in support of charitable causes.

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest lay Catholic organization, with more than 1.75 million members in the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Central America, and Poland.

The Special Olympics San Diego County Spring season is here!
We are currently recruiting volunteers for the many events. Opportunities are available on a first come, first serve basis. Please e-mail me and let me know which events or event you would like to assist with. Remember that all volunteers must register with us to volunteer at an event. When you respond, I will send a confirmation e-mail back to you confirming the event, time and location you will be helping us with!
I am also hoping that there are some of you who would like to be a LEAD on each of the categories. As the LEAD, you will be in charge of the volunteers for that position. We will give you a list of their names and the all duties associated with the position.

A major new survey presents perhaps the most detailed picture we've yet had of which religious groups Americans belong to. And its big message is: blink and they'll change. For the first time, a large-scale study has quantified what many experts suspect: there is a constant membership turnover among most American faiths. America's religious culture, which is best known for its high participation rates, may now be equally famous (or infamous) for what the new report dubs "churn."
The report, released today by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, is the first selection of data from a 35,000- person poll called the U.S. Religious Landscape Survey. Says Pew Forum director Luis Lugo, Americans "not only change jobs, change where they live, and change spouses, but they change religions too. We totally knew it was happening, but this survey enabled us to document it clearly."
According to Pew, 28% of American adults have left the faith of their childhood for another one. And that does not even include those who switched from one Protestant denomination to another; if it did, the number would jump to 44%. Says Greg Smith, one of the main researchers for the "Landscape" data, churn applies across the board. "There's no group that is simply winning or simply losing," he says. "Nothing is static. Every group is simultaneously winning and losing."
For some groups, their relatively steady number of adherents over the years hides a remarkable amount of coming and going. Simply counting Catholics since 1972,for example, you would get the impression that its population had remained fairly static - at about 25% of adult Americans (the current number is 23.9%). But the Pew report shows that of all those raised Catholic, a third have left the church. (That means that roughly one out of every 10 people in America is a former Catholic, and that ex-Catholics are almost as numerous as the America's second biggest religious group, Southern Baptists.) But Catholicism has made up for the losses by adding converts (2.6% of the population) and, more significantly, enjoying an influx of new immigratns, mostly Hispanic.
An even more extreme example of what might be called "masked churn" is the relatively tiny Jehovah's Witnesses, with a turnover rate of about two-thirds. That means that two-thirds of the people who told Pew they were raised Jehovah's Witnesses no longer are - yet the group attracts roughly the same number of converts. Notes Lugo, "No wonder they have to keep on knocking on doors."
The single biggest "winner," in terms of number gained versus number lost, was not a religious group at all, but the "unaffiliated" category. About 16% of those polled defined their religious affiliation that way (including people who regarded themselves as religious, along with atheists and agnostics); only 7% had been brought up that way. That's an impressive gain, but Lugo points out that churn is everywhere: even the unaffiliated group lost 50% of its original membership to one church or another.
The report does not speculate on the implications of its data. But Lugo suggests, "What it says is that this marketplace is highly competitive and that no one can sit on their laurels, because another group out there will make [its tenets] available" for potential converts to try out. While this dynamic "may be partly responsible for the religious vitality of the American people," he says, "it also suggests that there is an institutional loosening of ties," with less individual commitment to a given faith or denomination.
Lugo would not speculate on whether such a buyer's market might cause some groups to dilute their particular beliefs in order to compete. There are signs of that in such surveys as one done by the Willow Creek megachurch outside Chicago, which has been extremely successful in attracting tens of thousands of religious "seekers." An internal survey recently indicated much of its membership was "stalled" in their spiritual growth, Lugo allowed that "it does raise the question of, once you attract these folks, how do you root them within your own particular tradition when people are changing so quickly."

Thank you, Nellie, for your tireless energy and devotion to the prolife cause.

We first met 30 years ago at the March for Life and I am proud that thousands of Knights of Columbus have volunteered to help stage this march over the years.

We have followed your example. We help organize Marches for Life all across North America - at the West Coast March for Life three days ago in San Francisco, in Mexico City last fall, and in the Canadian capital of Ottawa each May.

We gather here today at the beginning of another election year, a year in which almost all of the candidates promise "change." But we have been coming to Washington for 35 years asking for change - asking to change Roe v. Wade.

Thirty-five years ago, the Supreme Court imposed a change on our nation that is at odds with our history, our Constitution and our humanity. And it is time to change Roe v. Wade.

Abortion is wrong because abortion hurts everyone.

It takes the life of the innocent unborn child.

It victimizes the mother and the father.

It compromises doctors and nurses.

It undermines respect for judges.

It implicates the taxpayer who pays for it.

It coarsens the society that tolerates it.

No woman should feel that she must have an abortion.

We can find a better way.

We can build a society in which every woman and child can find the support and care they deserve.

We can build a culture of life.

We can give hope to every woman and every child.

Today I see thousands of helping hands ready to make this hope a reality and I know there are millions more.

Together we can bring change.

Dear Worthy State Deputy and Brother Jim,

The California Catholic Conference has set as one of its legislative priorities the defense and support of “the institution of marriage between a man and a woman as the basic foundation of society.” This principle was approved as law by over 60% of voters in favor of Proposition 22 in the year 2000. However, this law is now at risk of being overturned by the California Supreme Court later this year, when it rules on the question of its constitutionality. Moreover, our state legislature has attempted to pass a law to legalize same-sex marriage, thus thwarting the will of the voters.

For this reason, the Protect Marriage group, which originally filed Proposition 22, has now filed an initiative to amend the California state constitution to define marriage as the union of a man and a woman, thereby granting it immunity from the courts and the legislature. I have been personally supporting a group of Catholics here in San Diego who are working with Protect Marriage to qualify this initiative for the November ballot.

Many things have to happen to make this possible, not the least of which is the collection of 1.1 million signatures by mid-April. The efforts of the Knights of Columbus in our state can be an important factor in making this happen. However, if and to the extent that any signature gathering takes place on parish property, it must, of course, be carried out in accordance with the position and under the direction of the local bishop and parish pastor. This principle must be clearly born in mind and respected.

At the same time, please know that any support which the Knights of Columbus can give to this most critical endeavor would be greatly appreciated by all of us who are working to get the marriage amendment intiative put on the ballot for the election this November.

Taking this occasion to extend to you my sentiments of esteem and best wishes, I remain,

One of the most overlooked Knights of Columbus Programs is the State Scholarship, designed specifically for high school seniors planning to enter College or continuing students currently enrolled in a College or University. Deadline for submittal of an application portfolio is March 1, 2008

The Scholarship Program offers 11 $1,000 scholarships plus 1 $500 scholarship, has helped many students in California to afford to begin College and others to stay in College and provides no restrictions to the type of school, whether a public or private institution.

Qualifications of Scholarships, Required Documents, Scholarship Application, Verification of Eligibility, Personal Statement Requirements, Application Portfolio Deadline and Portfolio Submittal Location are all found on Pages 124 through 127 within the California State Council Program Handbook and the State Council Website. State Deputy Testimonial Dinner next Saturday

Worthy Brothers,

I received an e mail from our Chapter President, Jack O'Rourke, stating
that there were only 86 reservations for the State Deputy's Testimonial
Dinner. Each Council should do all in ther power to support our State
Deputy, Jim Scroggin. He has devoted his life to the California State
Council for two years as State Deputy, six years in other chairs, and
many
years on his way up to the State Council.

All of the State Officers have RSVP'ed to attend this dinner. Since
the
State Officers are all attending let us attend to meet and greet them.
Please talk to your officers, past officers, and interested Brothers to
arrange to have a group attend the Testimonial together. Please call
Michael Galasso at 858-485-5339 to confirm all reservations. Since the
event is on the Marine base at Miramar, they need a guest list in
advance.
Therefore the deadline for reservations was Jan. 5th. If you reserve

Pope's Midnight Mass ushers in Christmas

Pope Benedict XVI urged the faithful to set aside time in their lives for God and the needy, as he ushered in Christmas early Tuesday by celebrating Midnight Mass in St. Peter's Basilica.

Echoing a theme he has raised about an increasingly secular world, Benedict said that many people act as if there is no room for spiritual matters in their lives.

"Man is so preoccupied with himself, he has such urgent need of all the space and all the time for his own things, that nothing remains for others, for his neighbor, for the poor, for God," he said.

Benedict also use the homily to link the Christmas message to the church's growing environmental concerns, referring to early theologians who interpreted Christ's role as also a healer of the Earth and universe.

"He came to restore beauty and dignity to creation, to the universe: This is what began at Christmas and makes the angels rejoice. The Earth is restored to good order by virtue of the fact that it is opened up to God ... Thus Christmas is a feast of restored creation."

Under Benedict, the Vatican has been taking steps toward greater environmental action, a key element of which has been its involvement in reforestation project aimed at offsetting its carbon emissions.

In a homily delivered in Italian in front of thousands packing the basilica, Benedict asked the faithful to make room for God, as well as the less fortunate, in their lives.

"Do we have time for our neighbor who is in need of a word from us, from me, or in need of my affection? For the sufferer who is in need of help? For the fugitive or the refugee who is seeking asylum? Do we have time and space for God?"

Benedict drew parallels between what he perceives as modern society's refusal of God and the story of how Jesus was born in a manger because there was no space for his family at a nearby inn.

"In some way, mankind is awaiting God, waiting for him to draw near. But when the moment comes, there is no room for him," he said.

But the message of Jesus' birth, which is marked on Christmas, is also that "God does not allow himself to be shut out," Benedict said. "He finds a space, even if it means entering through the stable; there are people who see his light and pass it on."

Earlier, as Midnight Mass began, Benedict blessed the crowd of pilgrims, Romans and tourists, as he walked in a procession up the main aisle to the central altar, which was decorated with red poinsettia flowers.

As a choir sang, Benedict sprinkled incense on the altar under Bernini's massive bronze baldachin before opening the service with the traditional wish for peace in Latin: "Pax vobis" ("Peace be with you"). The faithful responded: "Et cum spiritu tuo." ("And also with you.")

Four children, some in native costume from their countries, brought flowers to the altar, placing them near a statue depicting baby Jesus as Benedict, dressed in white and gold-colored robes, joined a choir in a hymn.

For those unable to get into the midnight service there were giant screens set up in St. Peter's Square, which was made festive with a twinkling Christmas tree and the Vatican's Nativity scene.

Officials unveiled the life-size Nativity on Monday, revealing the statues of Mary and Joseph, Jesus' parents, in a huge house-like structure located next to the Vatican's giant, twinkling Christmas tree.

This year, the scene of Jesus' birth was depicted in a recreation of Joseph's Nazareth home rather than the traditional manger in Bethlehem. Officials at the unveiling said the shift underscored the idea that Jesus was born not just in a single place, but everywhere and for everyone.

Hours before Midnight Mass, Benedict briefly appeared at his studio window to light a candle as a symbol of peace, blessing the crowd with the light before leaving it on the sill.

At noon on Tuesday, Benedict was to deliver his traditional Christmas Day "Urbi et Orbi" speech — Latin for "to the city and to the world" — from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, in which he often touches on current events and issues of concern to the Vatican. He then is expected to issue Christmas greetings to the faithful in more than 60 languages

Christmas Eve toys give away

Please pass this message along to all Brothers, family members, and
friends who may be able to help.

I realize that Christmas is a time to thank God for the gift of His
Son,
Jesus, and a time to share with your families. However, if you could
spend your Christmas Eve volunteering on Market Street near 805 you
would
be the presence of Christ to about 8,000 needy people!

Shabach Ministries and the San Diego Motorcycle Club organize a Toys
for
Tots give-a-way on Christmas Eve from 7 to 10 PM. They not only will
give
away about 8,000 toys but also have at least 30 booths to give away
5,000
or more other items from each booth to families. The booths will have
items as varied as cookies to popcorn to cereal and more.

Organizers need 100 volunteers to help set up beginning about 5 PM.
They
will also need volunteers to help at the booths from 6 PM until about
10
PM (when all is given away). In addition, if you read this in time,
they
need pick up trucks for transporting items on Wednesday at 10 AM (Call
LeShawn for details). Finally, they could use some men as Santa Claus
(last year one Santa was there for 5,000 kids).

Please call LeShawn at (619) 288-0700 to volunteer. They need to put
together a list of volunteers to give to the SD Police Department so
they
can save $1,500 off the permit fees.

Volunteers need to wear black and white and be ready to serve! I hope
to
see many of you there on Christmas Eve!

My Brother Knights:

I want to thank you for attending this Chapter meeting hosted by St Charles, Imperial Beach and Grand Knight Hermie Francisco.

The month of October was indeed an unusually busy and disturbing month.
We had the MR Drive which I hope you all participated in and have turned in your paperwork. We also had the Wildfires which ravaged San Diego County. The Supreme Office and the State Office have both been at the ready to help those victims who lost their houses in the fires. We at the Chapter level have been trying to compile a list of Brothers and their families who lost their homes. Our list is not nearly complete and we need to get those names, addresses and membership numbers together so that we can provide both Supreme and State with this information. I am asking all who have any knowledge of these survivors to please email me with this information so that I can pass it on. Time is of the essence. I am asking you to please put this problem on the front burner of your many to do list items. Being a survivor of the Cedar Fires I can assure you that your brothers in distress will be appreciative of all that we can do.

Secondly, as you are aware, the Month of December is a dark month for the Chapter. We have several big projects going on in January and will not have a meeting before they start. The Biggest project will be our State Deputies Testimonial Dinner which will be held on January 12th. Both the State Deputy and some of the State Family will be attending. We want to have a big turnout for this function and show the State that we are truly the finest Chapter in the State. Brother Michael Galasso will speak on this event during the meeting.

We are also closing in on the second half of the Columbian Year. Several of our key projects are coming up soon. The Religious Appreciation Dinner and the Priests Golf Tournament will soon be upon us. Please make sure you push these events and make them a success.

Bella, the movie, was released last month and everything I have heard and read so far has been extremely positive. I want to thank you for supporting this project.

Please support our annual “Keep Christ in Christmas” program. If your council doesn’t participate in selling these Christmas cards and other items, please find a council that is involved and help them out. You can show your support by making your Christmas purchases from one of the participating councils.

Finally the Marion Hour of Devotion Program has gotten underway and I hope you will participate in this program.

I want to thank you for attending and I ask that you pay attention to all of the information you will hear tonight and inform your Councils.

Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson with Bella star and Knight Eduardo Verastegui and singer Tony Bennett at the Bella premiere in New York City on Oct. 25.

With the help of Knights of Columbus councils around the United States, Bella, the major motion picture with a strong pro-life message, had a very good opening at the box office.

With a limited release in 165 theaters in major markets around the United States., it grossed $1.3 million and had the highest per screen average ($7,928) of any movie opening on more than two screens the weekend of Oct. 27-28, including the top-grossing movie, Saw IV.

For the weekend of Nov. 2-44, it grossed more than $1 million and had the third highest per screen average ($5,381) of any movie on more than 50 screens.

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson recommends that local councils take advantage of an opportunity to pre-purchase groups of discounted tickets and raise money for local pregnancy resource centers. These tickets can then be resold at face value to encourage people to view the film.

The movie opens in 12 more cities on Nov. 9, and high ticket sales this week could prompt the movie's distributor to add additional cities nationwide.
Bella, whose star and producers are Knights, won the Toronto Film Festival’s People’s Choice Award.

“If we can get millions of people to see this film, we are going to save lives,” Anderson said. “We can get people to understand what we mean when we talk about a culture of life, or what it means to live a Catholic life. Our support of this movie can be the start of something great.”
Online Resources

Groups of tickets will be sold to councils for no more than $12 each depending on the market. Councils should consider working together with local parishes to purchase and sell tickets to a special screening of the film.

As an added benefit, councils who buy out a showing and resell the tickets will receive credit for all four Church activities for the Columbian Award (reported on the Columbian Award Application [#Sp-7]). Such screenings are also a great opportunities for councils to recruit new members. Membership materials should be available at these events for interested potential members.

Bella was produced by Knights Leo Severino and Sean Wolfington, and stars Knight Eduardo Verastegui. Verastegui and Wolfington took their First Degree in New Haven at the June State Deputies meeting.

The state deputies and their wives also enjoyed a premiere showing of Bella.

The movie tells the story of Jose (Verástegui), who gives up his career as a soccer superstar after a tragic incident.

He goes to work in his brother’s restaurant, where he befriends a pregnant waitress and begins to resolve some of the pain he stills feel about the life-changing accident. A former telenovela (soap opera) star in his native Mexico, Verástegui abandoned his burgeoning Hollywood career to start a new film company to produce movies with a moral message.

After the screening, Verástegui spoke briefly to the Knights. He described his character as a “man who wants to live a life of integrity and sacrifice everything” for family and others. The film does this by portraying Latinos and family life in a favorable light.

My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Most of the bishops across the countries, as well as many pastors, have been given a sneak peak at an award-winning film that has the potential to shape our culture for good. I want to take this opportunity to share with you my thoughts on the inspiring new movie, Bella, set for release on October 26 during Respect Life month.

Winner of the Toronto Film Festival's "People's Choice Award," Bella reaches audiences in a constructive and non-preachy way. Previous winners of that award, like 'Life is Beautiful' and 'Chariots of Fire', have gone on to win Best Picture Oscars!! Bella tells the story of how the unconditional love of a friend allows a woman in crisis to make life-affirming choices for herself and her child. It also uplifts the dignity of the human person and of the traditional family. Already, through pre-screenings and promotional events, hearts have been touched and lives have been changed. As our Lord said, “You will know a tree by its fruits” (Matthew 7:16 ), Bella has already produced amazing fruits.

As members of the Mystical Body of Christ and Christians with the responsibility to spread a message of love and virtue in our world, I want to encourage you to see this film and to promote this movie’s life-affirming and hope-filled message. Organizations you most likely recognize, including The Knights of Columbus and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul are endorsing and supporting this beautiful film, even dedicating time and resources to help fill theaters on opening weekend.

Pope John Paul the Second often spoke of the new evangelization and of using the media to speak the truth and of the power of the arts in shaping the culture. Governor seeks public opinion on whether to veto SB-94

The staff of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has added SB-94 to the list of bills on the governor's automated public opinion telephone line. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Sheila Kuehl, D-Los Angeles, would provide an additional $3.2 million a year in state funds for "family planning services."
Planned Parenthood affiliates in California have launched a major public relations campaign across the state in an effort to persuade Schwarzenegger to sign the bill because Planned Parenthood would be among the chief beneficiaries of the additional money.
Kuehl's bill would increase Medi-Cal rates for "family planning" only, but not for other medical services. The governor has until Sunday, Oct. 14, to either sign or veto the measure. If he takes no action, the bill automatically becomes law.
Both the Senate and Assembly Republican caucuses have urged the governor's veto. In a Sept. 14 letter to the governor, Senate Republican Leader Dick Ackerman wrote Schwarzenegger, "it is unclear why rates for family planning services should be singled out for an increase from among the entire universe of services which Medi-Cal covers, especially when the increase was proposed at the eleventh hour of the legislative session. This proposed rate augmentation is more appropriately considered during the regular budget process."

Take a look at this site. I talked to the organizer. We can have a booth at no cost. We can sponsor a team of sitters. Cost to enter is $25 and goes to a program that helps the disabled to live independently. I received their postcard in the mail last month.

Thank you for visiting our special web page for information about our first annual event -the Glenn Ellison Memorial Fundraiser.

We are very excited to conduct this event on November 3, 2007 at Liberty Station (formerly NTC in Point Loma) from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

What is a sit-a-thon? It's the same as a marathon, only not as difficult. This is about relaxation, making new friends, learning something new, and helping Developmental Services Continuum provide excellent services for the people we serve.

Come sit - be a sprint sitter (5 minutes at each station) or a marathon sitter (watch a Bob Hope movie), or even a virtual sitter. Sound silly? It is! Who wants to walk or run when you can sit and raise money for a great non profit organization? The idea is to form a team of ten or more at a minimum of $25 per person, so each team will bring in $250 at a minimum to help DSC reach our financial goals.

Sitting will take place on bean bag chairs, futons, directors' chairs, lazy-boys, rocking chairs, straight backed chairs, executive chairs, whatever we can find to make your day more enjoyable. You can be a sprint sitter or a marathon sitter (there's even a movie to watch in studio seats).

We will have several booths where you can sit and play board games, video games, read, knit, play card games, or just meditate. We hope to have several celebrities and well known community figures come out to visit.

Come make new friends and learn how Developmental Services Continuum has been serving the developmentally disabled for the past 25 years, and how you can help in our mission to provide excellent care to the developmentally disabled community.

Brother Knights---A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

Just six years ago we witnessed and experienced the horrific attacks on American soil in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. This took place on September 11, 2001. Today, September 11, 2007 is the sixth anniversary of those tragic events. This tragedy is the modern day Pearl Harbor for all of us born since World War II.

We must continue to remember those Americans who died in the buildings and airplanes unnecessarily and also to remember those policemen, firemen, and members of the military who also died or were injured in these attacks trying to save those in the twin towers. These men and women were certainly heroes in their own right and deserve to be honored each year.

In 2001 the Knights throughout California responded instantaneously with a Mass and donations to the “Heroes Fund” to help those families affected by the loss of their loved ones. Today, I hope that there will be many Masses of Remembrance for those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. I congratulate each Council, District, Chapter, or Assembly who is taking part in a Memorial Mass today.

We must never forget those who died then and we must continue to pray for the safety and protection of the members of our military who are fighting for our freedom in the Middle East. They will always be in my prayers.

May Almighty God Bless Each And Every One Of You And May Our Lady Of Victory Protect You.

Brother Knights

The Regina Coeli Council 4953 will host BOTH a First and Second Degree Exemplification Ceremony
on Thursday, September 13th in the K of C Hall, located at 515 W. Valley Parkway in Escondido.

Check-in time for the 1st Degree will be 6:45 p.m. We plan to close the Main Entrance Door (on the
West side of the building next to the parking lot) at 7:15 p.m. Our council will start the 1st Degree
at 7:15 p.m.

For those that arrive after 7:15 p.m., they can enter the hall through the street entrance on the North
side of the building. They can wait in the bar area until the 1st Degree is completed.

The 2nd Degree will be conducted by the District 104 Second Degree Team from San Marcos and
will start as soon as possible following the 1st Degree (approximately 8:15 p.m.).

At this time we do not have an estimated number of candidates for the First Degree, but we will be
flexible and take care of all who show up on time.

All councils should provide membership cards, rosaries, and copies of "These Men They Call Knights"
for their candidates.

As all of you should know, there is a Third Degree Exemplification Ceremony scheduled for
Sunday, September 23rd at Council 13007 in Lakeside, so this is a great opportunity to have all of
your council's candidates complete all three of their degrees this month.

Hope to see you all Thursday evening - September 13th.

I realize this is August in San Diego, but this is an important ceremonial. The appropriate attire is jacket and tie for candidates and sideliners. Minimum attire is slacks and a shirt with a collar. No shorts or tank tops will be allowed. We need to present a very positive image to new Knights as they progress through the degrees of our Order. For September 22nd, we’ll need various volunteers for different jobs. For those who are familiar with the sports of soccer, softball, and volleyball will be helpful in assisting in the games. Otherwise, there are jobs such as service support(i.e. Garbage detail, Making sure water and ice is available for the athletes, set-up and break-down, etc.). Our Lady of Guadalupe Recuitment Postponed

Worthy Brothers,

I arrived at Our Lady of Guadalupe and found that the pastor and lead
contact had postponed the membership drive until next weekend Saturday,
August 25 after the 5 PM mass or the Sunday, August 26th after masses
at
7:30 AM, 9 AM, 10:30 AM 12 noon, and 7:30 PM.

I hope that this arrives in time to prevent an unnecessary trip to OLG
this weekend. I trust that many will respond to my plea for help
recruiting next weekend.

I have both English and Spanish flyers, a English recruitment posters
(and
two in Spanish), English contact cards (921e), K of C Ask Me buttons,
pens
and notebooks. When you come next weekend for the recruitment drive we
will be ready. If any of you have any Spanish recruitment posters or

The Information night originally set for Tuesday, August 21 will be

Please print and copy the attached flyer about the 4th Degree Installation
of Officers ceremony aboard the USS Midway Museum. This event is a
marvelous opportunity to recruit for the 4th Degree and for the Knights of
Columbus. Invite Brother Knights, friends, family, and prospects to
attend.

We need your help. This event is huge (at least 300 attending). Contact
your Assembly and let them know that the projected cost of the event is
$600 for facilities and $400 for food and water. Each Assembly is asked
to contribute $100 or more to help pay for the event. We also need

Minutes of the Chapter meeting on July 20. 2007 held at
Ramona Council, Host Grand Knight- Tim Corrigan

At 7:30 PM Pre-Meeting Speaker #1, Anthony DeBellis, executive producer of the Champions of Faith documentary DVD was introduced. Mr. DeBellis explained that in 2006, during Major League Baseball’s Spring Training, his documentary was shot. It includes music by Bob Dylan and Third Day. The purpose of the film is to show Catholic, star baseball players giving testimony to the power of their faith in their lives. The film crew hoped to get one good interview at each of the ballparks they visited but were often blessed as two, three, or even four team members opened their hearts. The DVD is an evangelization tool that costs only $20. It is a non-threatening way to introduce our Catholic faith to others, or a tool to strengthen the ties to the church of a lapsed Catholic or for young people.

Speaker #2, Dr. Derry Connolly, President of the new John Paul the Great Catholic University, arrived to deliver information about the school located in Scripps Ranch near USIU. Dr. Connonlly believes that universities today can have a huge impact on society today especially in respect to their influence on media.
Since Satan now has his most powerful tools ever, the internet and cell phone porn, the church should fight back but is currently doing nothing. However, John Paul the Great University is training young people how to positively influence media and the world through its two Bachelor of Science degree programs in Entertainment Media and Entrepreneurial Business.
The school currently has 30 students, young people who are on fire for our faith. Bishop Brohm celebrated the first mass at the university’s chapel and has assigned two priests to JPGU. Dr. Connolly hopes to have 50 new students next year bringing their total to about 90. The cost to attend is about $18 k per year compared to USD that charges about $27 k
.

District Deputies were provided with these overdue invoices to deliver to the Councils.
The 2007-2008 Chapter Assessments were mailed out June 1st and 40 Councils have already paid. If your Council has not paid and needs the assessment invoice, call me, Michael Brault, at (619) 548-3190 to give me your billing address. In addition, the Chapter Delegate sheets were mailed out on June 1st and 38 have arrived thus far. All delegates with a legible e mail address listed have been added to the e mail Olla list. New Council Development & Roundtable Report – John Fox - The K of C State website has an online State newsletter published monthly. The June newsletter had a report on State efforts during the 2006-07 Columbian year for the two area's of New Council Development & Roundtables. There are about seven probable Councils in the San Diego area that are being worked on diligently in hopes of making them a reality in very near future. The State N.C.D. goal for 2007- 08 is sixteen new Councils.
Fr. Michael McGivney had dream of a presence of Knights in all parishes, missions, universities. We welcome each of these new Councils.
How will San Diego Chapter succeed in both N.C.D. & Roundtable development? Establishing Roundtables should be a goal of all Councils,
District's, the Chapter, and 4th Degree Assemblies.
1. Councils should fill out Roundtable form #2629 submitting it to Supreme, the state, and our N.C.D. / R.T. Chairman.
2. District Deputies’ should search out possibilities for roundtables in their assigned districts.
3. There should be team efforts by all to support the N.C.D. / R.T. Chairman to achieve State or Supreme goals 2007-08.
Last year the California Roundtable program saw its strongest success ever with 246 roundtables to date. This represents total of 20% of all the listed parishes in California without K of C presence. California was one of only 10 jurisdictions that achieved last year’s quota. California
Ranked 2nd in our Order.

Bill Brown – Bella the Movie – Special Report - Earlier this year, both our Supreme Knight and our State Deputy were struck by the wonderful message and dramatic impact of the movie Bella. It deals with serious issues facing people today such as family values, abortion or adoption, discrimination, social justice, and character. This movie may well follow the footsteps of The Passion of the Christ and The Chronicles of Narnia by showing Catholic, Christian values to the whole world. Therefore, it was the decision of the leadership of the K of C to enlist the full support of our Brotherhood to insure its success.
Soon after the Supreme Knight and our State Deputy viewed the film, a letter was sent to Grand Knights and District Deputies asking for cooperation and support. Our State Deputy gave Metanoia (the production company) addresses and phone numbers of District deputies with permission to contact them. Metanioa offered to send background information to District Deputies and Grand Knights. Councils, Assemblies, and or Districts are URGED to host a pre screening of Bella. The supreme and State Councils have approved a programs that asks each Council to: 1) select a local theater, 2) put up $3,000 front money to buy a section of the theater, and 3) recover the $3,000 via ticket sales to Council members, parishioners, and others. Supreme has suspended Section 122 of the Charter, Constitution, and By-Laws to that prohibits the distribution of more than $500 without notice to the Council. Therefore, officers are now free to develop their action plans to support this incredible, Order-wide event.
A revised schedule for release of Bella now has the movie in theaters approximately October the 26th. Pre release screenings arranged by Councils will be shown three to five days prior to general public release. September 1st is the cut off date to commit to a pre screening event and send in your money to Metanioa. Two Councils in District #104 have already committed to this effort and have selected their theaters.
Please read pp. 10 – 11 of the July issue of Columbia magazine for a detailed and wonderful review of the film and a call to action for all Councils. This film has the blessing of both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. Add that to our enthusiastic approval and call to action by both our Supreme Knight and State Deputy. Our Church and Order leaders are crying out for our support to make Bella the success that it should be. Take the risk and commit to a pre-screening.

Gene Garibay - Parades For the 4th of July Parade we had 75 Knights, family, or friends marching or riding, more than any other parade in the last 10 years! We used all of our flags; two even carried flags with no halters. Our parade call outs are for everyone – Color Corps, of course, but also for Knights, Squires, family, and friends wearing parade dress of white shirt with a collar, black or navy pants, and a Knights or patriotic ball cap. Ball caps will be available for those who need them. People watching parades recognize the Knights by their Colors – the capes, chapeaus, and swords – and now they are seeing us as a family group. Over 90% of the people I talk to say they like to see the Knights in parades. Our nest parade is the Columbus Day Parade – start promoting now. In the future, let’s get out a large group of Colors and other Knights for the blessing of the Bells and the Blessing of the Animals at the old Mission during the 3rd weekend of July.

Hugh Largey – Culture of Life: There are two items for this month. First, please support the Life Perspectives’ pro life, fund raising dinner at the Joan Crock Center on September the 15th. It will be a black tie affair featuring AC Green, an LA Lakers star, as master of ceremonies. AC Green is very involved in an organization that promotes sexual abstinence for youth. Second, make plans to support the Life Perspectives Life Walk on October 20th at Kit Carson Park in Escondido or Harry Griffin Park in La Mesa. Your Council or Assembly can join as a sponsor at either the $1.200 or the $1.800 level.

Larry Campitiello – Helping People with Intellectual Disabilities - MR chair forms are available tonight. Fill them out and I will mail them in for you. It’s time to order aprons now (deadline August 15th) and candy should be ordered in 4 to 6 weeks. There will be a meeting for Grand Knights, MR Chairs, and interested parties next Thursday, July 26th at 7 PM at St. Michael’s of Poway. A meeting in the South Bay will be held at St. Anthony de Padua in National City on Thursday, August 16th at 7 PM. .

Squires - Gene Buehl: From June 29th to July 1st approximately 100 boys and adults from Escondido to Napa converged on Mills college in Oakland for the 56th annual convention of the California State Circle of Columbian Squires. Two locals Circles attended and both received state awards. Past State Deputy Frank Nigro attended and presented the “Columbian Foundation for People with Mental Retardation, Inc. Annual Fund Raising Drive Award” to the Napa Circle #494 for the “Highest Gross Revenue Collected - $1,783.00” and for the “Most Hours by Entire Circle – 25 Squires worked 79 Hours.” Many Councils don’t even raise that amount of money or work those hours.
The Keynote Address was delivered by State Deputy Emilio Moure, himself an “honorary Squire.” During his presentation, he spoke of his pride of being a Brother Squire and of the Squires’ importance to our Order.
In the past I have spoken about the efforts of the State Circle to keep the room and board cost of the Convention down to $85 for the weekend. This year the cost approached $200 each and the additional cost was supported by the State Circle’s meager budget. The reason for the high cost was the lack of support for the Squires’ Convention booklet. Only 8 full-page ads, one 1/4 page ad, and five patron ads were sold for a total of only $850.00. This is not nearly enough to support the future of our Order!
In view of this, I would like to ask a Brother Knight to move, under new business, that the Chapter place into the budget the cost of a full page ad for the California State Circle Annual Convention booklet. I would also like to see this done on Council, Assembly, Circle, and Agency levels. Please bring this request back to your local organizations so that all Councils and Assemblies approve this addition to their annual budgets. For all Squires of the State, “I solicit your continued and kindly consideration.”

Difference in Life (Blood Bank) – Lucino Aleman: Council #12681 recently held a blood drive. There were no costs and it was just a little work because the Blood Bank provides help, posters, flyers, and prizes. Schedule a Blood Drive in your parish. Put out your arm. There is no cost. Encourage your friends to give every 8 weeks or every 56 days! The minimum age is 17 years old, you need to be 110 pounds or more and in good health.

Gene Garibay – Keep Christ in Christmas: It is time to order your supplies for Keep Christ is Christmas. Next month I will have a display and you may turn in your order forms. Remember that Keep Christ in Christmas can be much more than just Christmas cards. You can order supplies for a full billboard from Supreme. You may request scripts for radio spots. One Council gathered and displayed hundreds of nativity scenes in their parish hall. Find creative ways to Keep Christ in Christmas.

Chapter President’s Report (continued) – Jack O’Rourke: I want to thank Michael Brault for his efforts in making the 4th of July Parade a success. Thanks to his Assembly, Magellan, we have the two, perpetual trophies for parade participation. The Trophy for the “Most Participants” in the 4th of July Parade went to Magellan Assembly with 31 participants. The runner up, Fr. O’Callahan Assembly brought out 13 participants and they came out from North County. Also the “Highest Percent by Assembly” trophy went to Magellan Assembly with 12.8%. In the future it would be great if other Assemblies could win these trophies. Magellan earned these awards by calling their members and inviting them and their families to join in the event. Remember, you don’t even have to march. We will now have floats for those who need to ride.
I’d like to see great participation of the Color Corps for Rosaries for Peace coming up on Sunday, August 12th at 6:30 PM at Cathedral High School near Del Mar. See the flyer in this Olla. I’d like to see 40 to 50 men in Colors and many Council, Assembly, and Circle Banners. Faithful Navigators – please push this. Also, I am asking each Faithful Navigator to appoint a Parades and Events chair to work with Michael Brault to ensure that our Color Corps participation continues to rise.

New Business- Election of Chapter Officers:

Larry Campitiello – I don’t want to set a precedent with this, but I remember Past Chapter President, Leonard Brzezinski, and he was a truly special individual. He was a three war veteran – WWII, Korea, and Vietnam – and his Assembly is raising funds to place add his plaque to the memorials on Mt. Soledad. They need about $2,000 total and have already earned $1,000. As a patriotic gesture, we are asking any 4th Degree Assembly, Council, or individual to make a donation towards this cause to Council. #5012. You can make out the check to “Knights of Columbus.”

Jack O’Rourke – The Chapter budget was submitted. We will vote on it next month. There was a question regarding the amounts of income and expenses listed for the special events. It was pointed out the special events dinners are a “wash.” That is, we set the cost to cover the expenses. Therefore, it is OK to increase the expenses for the Religious Appreciation Dinner, as an example, since we anticipate inviting even more religious and having an even bigger event this year,

Lee Quarcelino – I am the 22nd District Commander for the VFW and I was recently at 29 Palms to see many of our vets returning from abroad. I was wearing a K of C pin and three different individuals asked me if they could join. I will be sure to bring form 100’s next time I greet our returning servicemen. Even the General of that base is a 4th Degree Knight. It would be a good idea to inform Supreme that the Knights should form a plan to recruit returnees from Iraq.

Ron Novak - Insurance Agent: Since the hour is late, I will be brief. Happy New Year! Yes, gentlemen, this is the first Chapter Meeting of a new Columbian year. Here are some thoughts our Order and about insurance. If you go to the website, www.kofc.org , you can see lots of news and announcements from Supreme. All of you should spend 20 to 30 minutes and view the Grand Knights’ Training Module. It is a fantastic training device, informative of all phases of F. Michael McGiveny’s dream. One of the ideas is that attitude is Caught not Taught. As we evangelize, we should exude confidence to cause people to ask us how to become a Knight. If we put out a positive attitude, people will ask. Did you know that 88% of our Brothers join to become more active in the church. However, 90% of those who lapse tell us it was because no one asked them to DO anything. Do not ignore these new members; use them! We have the tools to get them and keep them. Use the Admissions Committee Questionaire #????? To find out what they want to do. For members over one year in the Knights, use the Membership Interest Survey #??????. Supreme even has a template to create a trifold or bifold recruitment flyer for your Council. You can order the three-color paper for this. Remember, people don’t join the Order to attend meetings, they want to become involved in the Church and they want to derive some benefit.
One great benefit is the Jonathan/Swift scholarship fund offered to servicemen, fire fighters, police and others who serve our government and become permanently, completely disabled or are killed while serving our country. If they are insured, all their kids get a free, Catholic university education. There are also scholarships, set kids to apply. You are our leaders, learn more and urge others to learn more. Supreme does not make its money from membership, the money comes from Insurance. Our order reported donations of $143,816,000 last year with only 60% of the Councils reporting. In addition, over 68 million volunteer service hours were reported. We could double those numbers if every member was in insurance member. Use the From 100 insurance policy that only costs $25 every six months. Or, for only $300 you can start an annuity with a guaranteed interest of 3% but we are currently paying 4.85% or 5.1% on accounts over $10,000.

Robert Villalobos – State Secretary: Let me read for you today’s prayer from Knights for Christ (a K of C daily prayer and reflection book). He read the prayer for 7/20 which included a reflection about man’s landing on the moon. You’ve already heard about Bella, let me tell you that I was impressed. I met some 18 to 24 year old kids helping Bella. They are studying how to bring Catholic values to Hollywood and are acting out their values be working to promote Bella this summer. I will speak more about Bella tomorrow night at the Installation of Officers.
Our Chapter is coming back strong. I was impressed by the tremendous showing at this year’s Clergy Night. We had over 240 at the dinner. This was followed by an impressive showing at the 4th of July Parade. The State Officers were gratified to see the family participation at the parade. He ended with a reflection on the busy life of a State Officer.

July District Deputy Report # 108 – Ralph Fear
1. Representatives from all Councils in District 108 plus 2 insurance agents met 7/7/07 for orientation and trading of tips for a successful Columbian Year.
2. 2. Ascension Council 7902 will host its 4th annual BBQ after the 5:30 pm Mass at Ascension Church, Tierra Santa, on Saturday, August 18, 2007. Menu will include steak, chicken and all the fixings for a great meal. Tickets are $18 for adults, $5 for children's meal. July District Deputy Report # 109 – John Fox
District - #109 at Cabrillo Council hosted a Grand- Knights’ orientation for
4 districts. We had 4 District Deputies (from district # 109 John Fox,
# 110 Michael Brault, # 111 Ken Shier, #113, Dwight Rainey)., two Insurance
Agents, many Grand Knights.and their Officers. The 4 district - deputies were assigned topics to discuss to Grand Knights from the recent District Deputy
Orientation held on June 23rd- June 24th. We also were addressed by our Insurance Agents, Ron Nowak, and Joe Argier.
We served coffee, light snacks. we had about 30 in attendance. We
opened and closed the meeting with prayer. The meeting started 9 AM and ended 11 AM.
The next Grand Knight Orientation will be scheduled sometime in December, or January.
Everyone who attended grand knight orientation enjoyed it.

July District Deputy Report # 110 - Michael Brault
1. Four District Deputies conducted a Grand Knights’ Orientation meeting on Saturday July the 7th for a total of 27 attendees. Many ideas were presented to aid Councils in organizing the current Columbian year.
2. The South Bay Councils in both District 110 & 111 will be holding their 3rd Annual Fraternal Gathering, a dinner dance, at St. Charles hall in Imperial Beach on Saturday, September the 8th from 6 PM until Midnight. For more information about this event, call Michael Brault.

Lucino Aleman of Ferdinand Magellan Assembly – I want to thank Michael Brault for coordinating our upcoming 4th Degree Installation of Officers. He even has paid the $300 down payment to reserve the USS Midway himself. I am asking all Assemblies to help us with the Installation of Officers. Each Assembly should contribute $125 to cover the cost of the facility and the breakfast. In addition, look at the list of jobs for the event and call us to tell us what jobs your Assembly will complete. Councils and Circles can also volunteer. The Installation is a beautiful ceremony with all the flags and Color Corps on the deck of the carrier, boats on the bay actually have stopped to watch us. Bring friends, family, and prospects to the Installation on Saturday, August 18th from 9 Am until 10:30 AM. Continental breakfast will be served prior to the event beginning at 8 AM and will continue after the Installation.
